Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías (AD-15), Democratic Leaders Stand United with Texas Lawmakers and Fight Back Against Trump’s Power Grab

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías (D-Martinez) joined fellow members of the Assembly Democratic Caucus, Speaker Robert Rivas, Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire, and Texas and California Democratic lawmakers to fight back against Republicans’ undemocratic power-grab to secure Congressional seats.

“I proudly stood with some of the Texas legislators who have risked their careers, safety, and livelihoods to protect democracy,” said Assemblymember Ávila Farías. “Their courage— leaving their homes to stop a calculated attack on fair representation—reminds us that true leadership means sacrifice.”

California leaders stood alongside Texas Democratic lawmakers in Sacramento to oppose Texas Republicans’ attack on American democracy. Assembly Democrats understand the urgent need to confront Trump and Republicans’ dangerous political agenda head-on by empowering voters to resist and defend California.

"California Democrats will not allow Trump’s Republican Party to rig the system and take permanent control of the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. “We are prepared and we will fight fire with fire. We will do whatever it takes to defend our democracy. We will do whatever it takes to protect the voices, the votes, and the rights of every American."

Assemblymembers reinforced a commitment to California voters to see the proposed maps and cast the ultimate decisions, depicting the most transparent process in the country. Members also insisted on sustaining the independent commission.

“California will always defend the right to vote—and the will of the people. Voters made it clear: they want independent redistricting, not partisan power grabs. Unlike Texas, we won’t silence that voice. We’ll send this issue to the ballot box—where it belongs. We choose courage over convenience, accountability over ambition, and democracy over dictatorship.
