CONCORD, CA – Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías (D-Martinez) issued the following statement today in response to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining individuals in Contra Costa County:
“Today, over 1.6 million undocumented workers drive California’s economy — contributing more than $150 billion each year. Let that sink in. From food and caregiving to construction and transport — these essential jobs are often done by people without legal work status. Despite their indispensable role, many live in constant fear of deportation. For many, those fears were realized this week.
“On Tuesday my office received disturbing reports of ICE agents descending into Concord and detaining individuals - outside of immigration court.
“This federal administration promised to deport criminals, not hardworking taxpayers. These were families doing things the “right way” — pursuing a lawful path to legal status and citizenship. No one should live in fear. But, many in our Latino communities do — every single day.
“So to my neighbors in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties: Know your rights. I encourage you to stay informed, engaged, empowered:”
You have the right to remain silent. You do NOT have to sign anything.
And without a signed judicial warrant, you do not have to open the door.
“I will continue to monitor this situation closely. Regardless of your immigration status, you are welcome at my office and in our community. If you are in need of any assistance or would like to be directed to community resources, please do not hesitate to reach me at my District Office at (925) 521-1511.”
